Abstract:ThearticleconstitutesapragmaticanalysisofAchilles’firstspeechinHomer’sIliad.
Basingonadetailedreadingofthetext,bothonalexicalandgrammaticallevel,theauthormakes
anattempttoestablishpsychologicalmotivationsofitshero.Thelinearmethodofanalysisusedal-
lowsforacoherentinvestigationofthestatementwhereasthereferencestoearlierandlaterAchilles’
speechesandothercharactersoftheepicmayshedanewlightontheinterpretationoftheconflictof
thebravestwarriorwiththecommanderoftheexcursion,focusingthewholeactionofIliad.
Accordingtothemainassumptionofthearticle,theverboĭω,appearingalreadyinthefirst
verseofAchilles’speech,allowsforaninsightintoadynamicstructureofthehero’spsyche.Further
on,thecentralthemeofthearticleistheimplementationofalinguisticanalysistoapsychological
studyofthedevelopmentofHomer’sheroes.Thearticlealsotriestousetheobservationsmadeby
Homer’sexperts,suchasIrenedeJongandJohnRedfield.
