possi<*pod-si)andfrom-ts-(”Atlag<*atlants).Inmanycasesthespirant
wasreintroducedbyanalogy:insigmaticaorist,indativepluralwith-siandin
athematicverbforms.4
Thelastcase,however,raisesmanydoubts.Themostcontroversialareimper-
fectindicativeandpresentimperativeofsuchathematicverbsas:¥gamai“Iad-
mire”,dÚnamai“Ican,Iamableto”,śpistamai“Ican,Iknowhow”,œramai
“Ilove”,Kršmamai“Iamhanging”,pštamai“Iamflying”,śpriamhn“Ibought”,
diemai“Iamrunningaway”,†emai“Iamwalking”,Ônomai,“Iamreprimand-
ing”,whichconjugatelike†stamai.5Authorsofhandbooksdisagreewhetherthe
endinginsecond-personsg.imperf.andsecond-personsg.imperat.-soisalways
simplified.Accordingtothegeneraltheory,afterremovingsthedeponentverbs
arecontractedintow.
AhandbookbyGoliaspublishedin1962claimsthat-s-in-soendingalways
disappears,buttheextendededitionfrom2000informs:“[ł]deponentverbslose
-s-ofmedialending-so”(thisstatementisnotfirmedupbytheuseofanadverb
“always”).6Fidereralsodoesnotexpressanydoubtsinthismatter.7
Somescholarsareuncertainwhethersalwaysdisappearsintheseformsand
whetherthecontractionalwaysoccurs.Jurewiczclaimsthatafterthedisappear-
anceofsigmathevowelsalwayscontractinto-wandinexceptionalcasesinto
-aintheDoricdialect.8Goodwinbelievesthatformscontractedinto-woccur
frequently,SmythclaimsthatśdÚnw,ºdÚnwandºpistwoccurmorefrequently
thanśdÚnasoandºpistaso.9Moreover,Smythstatesthatboththecontracted
form(ºpistw),andtheformwheresigmaremainedunchanged(ºpistaso)are
characteristicoftheAtticdialect;theºpistwformoccursalsoinprose.10Heob-
