merchants,peopleofquality,poets,playwrights,intellectuals,sothatitwould
bewrongtoassumethatMachiavelliwaschieflyknowninEnglandthrough
thatsortofwickedpropagandacaricatureonefindsinGentillet’sAntimachia-
