WhatwewitnessinthisscenesetonthebattlefieldofAzincourt,isthat,drawingon
whatTodorovcallstheEuropeanculturalvirtuesofreason,justice,democracy,indi-
vidualliberty,andtolerance,theFrenchspeakermakesthememoriesofHenryVserve
toformulateapeaceidealalongthelinestobeformulatedbytheEuropeanCouncil
InitiativeinJune2004.
Azincourt:Siteofmemoryandsiteoftrauma
ForanotherwaytoappreciatetheEuropeanreceptionofHenryVduringthelate1990s
andtheearlyyearsofthenewmillennium,wemayprofitablyturntoamoretangible
example:thevillageofAzincourtitself,situatedintheFrenchdepartementofArtois,
andsiteofmemoryparexcellence.
Afternearly600years,thebattlefieldofAzincourtherecontinuestobeoneofthe
bestpreservedvenuesofitskind.Seasonshavecomeandgone,andwithittheannual
crops.Andevenifthesearenowharvestedmechanically,andevenifdeforestationhas
leftitsmarkhere,likeeverywhereelse,“lechampdebatailled’Azincourt”hasreally
changedlittle.
