1010Developmentoftheresearchareaandscopeofresearch
Researchwithinthesubjectmatterofhousingtendstobedifferentlyplacedin
theareaofsocialstudies,dependingonaresearchcommunityandonparticular
intellectualstyles(JohanGaltung,after:Hantrais2004,p.261).Untilthe1970s,
bothinWesternEuropeancountriesandinPoland,housingissueswereexamined
inadispersedmanner,onthebasisoftheoriesfromsuchdisciplinesaseconomics,
sociology,geographyandsocialpolicy.However,sincethen,partlyduetogrowing
importanceofhousingproblemsonthepoliticalagenda,thesubjectmatterof
housingbecameacoherentandinterdisciplinaryeldofstudy(Clapham,Clark,
Gibb2012,p.xv),whichisnowreferredtoashousingstudies.
Thedevelopmentofhousingstudiesisnoticeabletothelargestdegreein
Britishstudies.Sincethe1970s,housingstudiesinGreatBritainhaveevolved
fromaseparateresearcharea(frequentlydepictedassubsidiesofotherareas,
includinginparticularappliedsocialstudies,suchassocialpolicy,economics,
architectureandspatialplanning,McKee,Muir2013,p.4)tothefoundations
ofadisciplineofscience,subjecttofragmentaryinstitutionalisation1.
Attheturnofthe20thand21stcenturies,Britishhousingresearchers,
togetherwithresearchersfromothercountries(includinginparticularAustralia,
theNetherlandsandSweden),beganadiscussionaboutnewdevelopment

StudiesAssociation.Therearenoseparatemajorsconcerninghousingatthehighereducation
level,yetthereappearresearchcentresdealingwithhousing(Clapham,Clark,Gibb2012).
Attheturnofthe1980sand1990s,academiccoursesinhousingappearedatBritishuniversi-
ties.Theyservedasareactiontothedemandofpoliticiansandpractitionersforresearchinto
thisarea.Thisdemandresultedintargetinghousingstudiesatpracticalrecommendationsand
conclusionsforhousingpolicy.Asaresult,thedevelopmentofhousingresearchtheorieswas
inhibited,evenwithintheevidence-basedpolicyanalysis(Jacobs,Kemeny,Manzi2004,p.1).
