0.Introduction
GiventhecentralroleofSpartainthehistoryofarchaicandclassicalGreece,
studiesoftheallianceitledareasoldasclassicalstudiesthemselves.Aninvesti-
gationintothebeginningsofthesestudies,whileinterestinginitself,would,how-
ever,makelittlesensefromthepointofviewofhistoricalreconstruction.Dueto
anincreasingnumberofsources(inscriptions),theprogressofourknowledge
concerningthemechanismsofGreekinterstatelawsandpoliticalstructuresofthe
archaicworld,aswellasadeeperreflectiononthefunctioningoforaltradition
anditsusebyhistoriographyemerginginthefhcentury,theearlierattempts
todescribetheSpartansymmachyhavebecomemoreofahistoricalcuriosity
thanafoundationforfurtherresearch.Nevertheless,itisworthnotinghowvery
diferentinterpretationsoftheoriginsofthisalliancehavebeen.Terecon-
structionsofFriedrichKörtum,whosawinthePeloponnesianLeague(onthis
designation,seebelow)aDoricalliancefromtheperiodoftheReturnofthe
HerakleidaiappropriatedbytheSpartans,orErnstCurtius,whorecognisedin
itakindofamphictyonymeanttoprotecttheOlympiansanctuary,nowadays
seemcompletelyfanciful.Butfancifulastheyare,theyactuallyhaveverylittlein
common.

Suchdiversityremindsusthatallthereconstructionsoftheearly
historyofthePeloponnesianLeaguewerepossiblebecauseofthefactthatł
incontrastwiththeHellenicLeague,orDelianLeagueandtheSecondAthe-
nianEmpirełtheSpartansymmachyhadnostartingpointthatcouldbeeasily
