Tefirstpremiseconcernsthenatureofthesources.Tetraditionaliststakeit
forgrantedthatthescantyhistoriographicalsources,inspiteoftheirchronologi-
caldistancefromtheeventstheydescribe(thisconcernsHerodotusinparticular),
constitutearelativelyfaithfulreflectionofthepoliticalrealitiesofthesixthand
earlyfhcenturies,and/orthatwehaveatourdisposalanepigraphicdocumen-
tation(transmitteddirectlyorindirectly)whichpertainstotheserealities(espe-
ciallytreatieswithTegeansandAitolians).Tisgivesrisetoahistoricalpremise:
byjuxtaposingtheallegedpiecesofinformationaboutthearchaicinterstaterela-
tionsofSpartawiththemoreextensiveanddetaileddatapertainingtotheclas-
sicalperiodandbyobservingsimilaritiesintheimagesoftheSpartanalliance,
thescholarsbecomeconvincedthatthestructuresofthesymmachyremained
unchangedwiththepassageoftime,or,moreprecisely,thatthesymmachyas
weknowitfromtheperiodofthePeloponnesianWarhadalreadyexistedinthe
sameformonehundredyearsearlier.Atthesametime,sincetheSpartansym-
machyappearstobeauniformpoliticalentityduringthePeloponnesianWar,also
theimageofauniformpatternofrelationsbetweenSpartaandthealliesispro-
jectedontothearchaicperiod.Tis,inturn,resultsinalegal-historicalconstruc-
tion:ifthestructureofthePeloponnesianLeaguehadnotchangedbetweenthe
