larChristianmovement,whichfirstappearedinnineteenth-century

andmanlinesswasthenexportedtotheUnitedStates.Animportant
partofthebookisthedepictionoftheheydayofMuscularChristi-
anityinAmerica,whichlastedroughlyfrom1880to1920.Although
themovement’sdominantcharacterwasofProtestantorigin,theroleof
theCatholicChurchinpromotingsportisalsobrieflydiscussedhere.
