INTRODUCTION
Thisbookisbasedonaseriesoflecturesonstatisticalmethodsdeliveredatthe
FacultyofMedicineoftheJagiellonianUniversityMedicalCollege.Thegoalof
thiscourseistointroducebasicstatisticalconceptsandtoolsnecessarytoanalyse
medicaldata.Itisnotassumedthatamedicalstudentthefuturedoctorwillgointo
rapturesoverstatisticalmethods,quithis/herbeautifulprofessionandbecome
astatistician.Itis,however,assumedthatinthefutureprofessionalcareertheyboth
willfindtheircommonlanguage.Thedoctorwillcommunicatewiththestatistician
andactivelyparticipateinanalysisofmedicaldatawhichgraduallyaccumulatein
his/herdatabase.Ifthereare10–20patients,thedoctorremembersallofthemand
theirrelatedevents.However,whenthenumberofpatientsreachesanumberofthou-
sandorevenmore,dataanalysiscanbeperformedonlywiththeuseofstatisticaltools.
Trendsinthedevelopmentofmedicinedemonstratetheincreasingroleofmonitor-
ingandcontinuousanalysisofmedicaldata.Theneedforpermanentanalysisisforced
byconstantchangesinlifeconditionswithinagivenregion(climatechanges,wealth,
fashion,lifestyle,travelling,etc.).Itbecomesnotonlynecessarybutalsoconvenientto
recordproblemsthepatientsdiscusswiththeirdoctors(familyphysician,hospitaldoc-
tor,emergencydoctor,etc.).Alargenumberofnewdrugsthatappearonthemarket
alsopromptindividualanalysisoftheireffects.
Thepresentationofbasicstatisticalnotionsandconceptsissupportedbyexam-
plesofstatisticaltestsperformedusingtheSASsoftwarepackage(version3).It
isassumedthatthereaderisfamiliarwithMicrosoftOfficeExcel.Thesestatis-
ticaltestsinSASarepresentedinaseparatesectionnottointerruptthecontinu-
ityofstatisticalreasoningwithtechnicaldetailsrelatedtoperformanceofatest.
ThebookcontainsalsoadatabaseofpatientsadmittedtotheCasualtyand
EmergencyWard(victimsoftrafficaccidents).Afterstudyingthecontentsofthis
sectionitisrecommendedtoperformaseriesofexercisesonanindividualbasis.Ref-
erencestothedatabaseareincludedinsetsofexercisesattheendofeachchapter.
