researchinterests,itwasonlynaturalthatyoureyesfellonMesopotamia,that

landdividednowbetweenSyriaandIraq,tothestudyofwhichyoudedicated

thenextthirtyyearsofyourlife.Elsewhereinthisvolumearethenamesofall

thedifferenttellsthatyouinvestigated,includingthelastandmostimportant

one,TellArbid,whereyoufollowedinthefootstepsofnootherthanMax

Mallowan.Ihadthepleasureoncetospendaneveningbythefountain,which

hasgiventhisvolumeitstitle,andpartakeofthegeneroushospitalityofyour

mission.

WhenyoutookthehelmofthePolishCentreofMediterraneanArchaeology

fromme,Iknewwewereingoodhands.Theinstitutionhasgrownimmensely

sinceitsfoundingbyKazimierzMichałowski,whowasaMasterforbothofus.

Youfacedanextremechallengeduringyourterminoffice.YourexcavationatTell

Arbid,likemyprojectinPalmyra,werebrutallyinterruptedbywar.Youfound

adifferentplace,firstinKuwaitand,recently,inOman.Iwishyoustillmany

yearsthere(perhapsagaininIraq?)andmanyevenmoreinterestingdiscoveries.
