Oneofthemainproblemssufferedbymanyofthesemountainousareasatpresent
isthelowlevelofhumanoccupancy,asisevidencedbythepredominanceofan
extremelylowpopulationdensity.Almosthalfofthestudiedmunicipalitieshave
aloweraveragedensityof10inhabitantsperkm

consideredasthethresholdof((demographicdesertification”,whichmakes
territorialrevitalizationverydifficultandstiflestheirchancesofdevelopment
withoutexternalpopulationalcontributions.Moreover,therearefewmunici-
palitiesthatdonotevenreach5inhabitantsperkm

;suchasituationisinthe
CabrerainLen,intheHighlandsofSoria,intheSierradeAyllonandinthe
SerrotainAvila,whileinSanabriaandtheVilluercasdataareobtainedwith
agreatdifficulty.Onlyinthosecaseswherethemountainareasarecloseto
urbanareasorstronglyinfluencedbyurbanization,aswellasinthoseinwhich
thereisoneortwoimportantpopulationcenters,aredensitieshigher,asinthe
AsturianCentralHighMountain,theSierraofBe
´jar-Candelario,theHernio
Massif,theValleyofTie
´tarandtheGorbeaMassif.Onaregionalscale,9outof
the17studycasestackledsurpasstheaveragedensity(13.9inhabitantsper
km
2
),whereastheremaining8donotreachit.
