the14thDalailamaduringHisfirstvisittoPolandin1993withthere-
questtodeputeaTibetanlecturer.AtpresentDr.ThuptenKunga
ChashabholdsthepositionoflecturerinTibetanattheOrientalInsti-
tute,WarsawUniversity;healsoteachesTibetanattheAdam
MickiewiczUniversityinPoznań.
Dr.ThuptenKungaChashabisoneoftheveryfewTibetanrefugees
whoobtainedacademicdegreesatEuropeanuniversities.In2001hegot
hisM.Phil.attheOsloUniversity*wherehestudiedundersupervision
ofProfessorPerKvaerne,withintheframeworkofaspecialacademic
programforTibetans.AfterhisreturntoPolandin2003,Thupten
KungaChashabobtainedaPh.D.degreeattheWarsawUniversity
wherehepresentedhisdissertation„SystemofClassicalTibetanGram-
marbasedonDngulchuDharmabhadra’sTreatiseSitu!izhallung
(1806)”,whichhasbeenpreparedunderthesupervisionoftheunder-
signed.
Thepresentworkisarevisedversionofhisdoctoraldissertation.It
containsanintroductiononthebeginningsanddevelopmentofTibetan
grammarandadiscussionofsomeknottypointsofTibetangrammar,an
editionandannotatedEnglishtranslationofDharmabhadra’scommen-
tarySitu!izhallunfrom1806,togetherwiththetransliteratedandtrans-
latedTibetanrootgrammartextsofSumcupaandRtagskyi!jugpa,as
partsofthemainwork,aswellastheappendicesandaglossaryofgram-
maticalterms.

tothestudyofTibetangrammar,presentedfromthestandpointoftradi-
