Abstract
In1781,TheCommissionofNationalEducationtransformedtheJesuitAcademy
ofVilniusintotheMainSchooloftheGrandDuchyofLithuania.Thenthe
reformeduniversitybeganneweducationofstudents,includingtheeducation
oflayteachers.Accordingtolegalregulations,theirpreparationtookplacein
seminarsforcandidatesthatwerecreatedatprimaryschools.Thearticledeals
withthefirstcandidatesfortheteachingprofessionfromLithuaniawhostarted
theirstudies,howevernotinVilnius,butinCracow.Agroupofeightstudentsleft
fromtheVilniusUniversity:SzymonChrościcki,MichałDymidowicz(1757–1822),
WiktorEysmontt,SzymonMalewski(1759–1832),GasparPolikowski,Franciszek
Sankowski,TadeuszSzmytt(1763–?),andFranciszekSzopowicz(1762–1839).Their
patronwasthepiaristpriestHieronimStroynowski(1752–1815).Aftertwoyearsof
studies,halfofthemreturnedtoVilnius.Therestcontinuedtheirpreparationfor
theprofessioninCracow.Three:MichałDymidowiczandFranciszekSzopowicz
andTadeuszSzmytbecameteachersatthecrownschoolsandworkedforthecause
ofeducation.AmongstthegroupofstudentswhoreturnedtoVilnius,Szymon
Malewskicametotheforeground,afterStroynowskihetookoverthefunctionof
thetutor(prefect)oftheteachercandidates’seminar.Theseminarforcandidates
forteacherswasopenedinVilniusin1783.Thestudieslastedatleastthreeyears
andthecandidatesgainedknowledgeofhumanities,mathematicsandnatural
sciences.ThisarticlealsoprovidesanoutlineofteachereducationinVilniusin
1783–1794.Reconstructingthefulllistofcandidatesforteachersisdifficultdueto
scarceresources.Furtherarchivalsearchesarenecessary.
