ContrarytothewidespreadperceptionthatTeam
10’sdiscoursewaslimitedtotheWesternEuropean
welfarestate,withoccasionalexcursionstoformer
EuropeancoloniesandtheU.S.,thisbookshowshowthe
keythemesandconceptsofthisdiscourseweregiven
adifferentiatedunderstandinginEuropeansocialist
countriesandthecountriesincludedinto“socialist
globalization.1Statesocialismisseennotonly
asaconditionofoppression,butalsoasachallenge
toandanaffordanceofarchitecturalpracticeand
imagination,withsuchcontributionsasHansen’s
biotechnologicalurbanismforsocialistPoland,Polónyi’s
projectsforthepostcolonialcountrieslinkedtothe
SocialistBloc,theprojectsforLiberecinCzechoslovakia
byMiroslavMasákandSIALLiberecandtherethinking
ofsocialstandardsintheworkofthe“Zagreb
revisionists.”
Atthesametime,theconceptofTeam10East
isalensthatallowsforamoredifferentiatedviewonthe
Team10discourseasawhole,stretchedbetween1953,
theyearwhenthefuturemembersofTeam10metfor
thefirsttimeattheninthCIAMconferenceinAix-en-
ProvenceandwhenStalindied,and1981,whenTeam
10ceasedtoexistduetothedeathofJaapBakemaand
whentheSovietUnionwasstillthemajorrivaloftheU.S.
andtheWest,eventhoughbythenthis(second)
superpowerhadbecomeentangledintheAfghanistan
warwhileitsossified
nomenklatura
wasincapable
ofpreventingthegradualcollapseofstatesocialism.
