bepossibleaftertheeliminationorthedevelopmentofanabilitytodealwith
existentialstatesthatpreventfromdeveloping,whichconsistsinaprogressive
changeinoneself.
Teneedtoknowoneselfdoesnotraiseanydoubtsinpedagogicalactions.
Learningtobecomeanobjectiveobserverofone’sownlifemeansdevelopingan
abilitytomakeconsciousdecisionsofchangesastheyareneededandaccepting
one’spain,grief,disappointmentasitisanindispensableelementofhumanlife.
Destructive,pain-inflictingfeelings(depression,lackofsense,anxiety)thatlead
toapathyandresignationfromlife,preventtheprocessofrehabilitation.How-
ever,asimplenegationthatisaimedatimprovingtheinmate’smentalstatewill
notsuffice,norwillitbringaboutkatharsis.Whatisindeedneeded,isadevelop-
mentofacceptanceoflifewithitsupsanddowns.Soexistentialrehabilitation
doesnotstandforatraininginmoodimprovingtechniques(“positivethinking”).
Tesignificanceoftheexistenceofthehumanbeingextendsbeyondthesphere
ofpsychicalcomfort.Tecorrectiveactionspresentedinthisworkaimnotonly
atimprovingthementalstateoftheinmatesanddevelopinganattitudebased
onreflectionandacceptanceandanabilitytodwellonone’slifeandcriminal
behavior,butalsoacceptingtheindispensableaspectsofhumanlife(alsosuf-
fering),discoveringthesenseoflifeandevokingmotivationforchangesinthe
deepestspheresofexistence.Teabilitytoacceptthebasicfactsofhumanexist-
ence,thefeelingofpainasanelementofdevelopment,theabilitytoperceivelife
inabroaderperspective(includingtheperspectiveofthecoffin)areelementsof
spiritualdevelopmentwhichareparticularlyemphasisedinrehabilitationviewed
holistically.Since:
Tehumanbeingthatisexistentiallyadaptedisabletodealwithabsurd,faithand
uncertainty,bybeingbrave,responsibleandabletolove(M.Adamiec1988:223).
Rehabilitationviewedintheexistentialistcontextisrehabilitationbasedon
reachinginternalharmony,acceptanceoflife,includingsufferingthatisindis-
pensable,andseekingthesenseandfindingtheaimoflife.Apartfromaccept-
anceofsuffering(findingitsmeaninginlifeasanelementofdevelopmentand
notdenyingthenegativeemotionalstates)theinmatesshouldbetaughtadmira-
tionandenthusiasmforlifeandafeelingofunitywiththeuniverse(thesocial
worldandtheworldofnature).Onlyahumanbeingthatfunctionsinanexisten-
tialistwayisabletoundertaketheprocessoftheirowndevelopment,transform
themselvesandtheirlivesundertaketheprocessofchange.
Tesenseoflifeisthemostimportantcomponentofthefunctioningofan
individualextendingfarbeyondthebiologicalandpsychicalrealm.Incontem-
plationofthehumanbeing,particularlyofthehumanbeinginthecondition
of“thelostsense”itisnotpossibletoomitcontemplationsoessentialtotheir
existence.Teneedforasenseoflifeisthebasicdrivingforcethatpushesand
propelsthehumanbeingtowardssuchactionsthatwillleadthemtoaproperde-
