communicationaimstorevealtheexternalandinternalrelationships
betweendiferentcultures,interpretingeachintermsoftheother,as
wellasbeingabletoanalyseitandcriticallyunderstandbothnativeand
non-nativecultures.Termssimilartothenotionofinterculturalcom-
municationincludethefollowing:cross-culturalcommunication,tran-
sculturalcommunication,interethniccommunication,andintercultural
interaction(BystrovandYermolenko2011:16).
Interculturalcommunicationresearchhasitslongtradition.Asnot-
edbyGudykunst(2004)theorisingaboutinterculturalencounterhas
alsomadetremendousprogressinthelast20years.Theneedforefec-
tiveandcompetentinteculturalcommunicationhasbeenrecognisedby
manyresearchers(e.g.,Chen2014;Hua2016;Neuliep2015).However,
thenotionofinterculturalcommunicationcompetenceitselfisvery
complexanditconsistsofatleastfourdimensions,namelyPersonalAt-
tributes,CommunicationSkills,PsychologicalAdaptation,andCultural
Awareness.Eachofthesedimensionscontainssomeothercomponents
(Chen2014:19).Literaturereviewreflectsthiscomplexity.Gudykunstet
al.(inGudykunst2004)dividetheintergroupandinterculturaltheories
intofivecategorieswhicharenotmutuallyexclusive:
1.Theoriesfocusingonefectiveoutcomes,whichincludethefollow-
ing:
culturalconvergencetheory(BarnettandKincaid1983;Gudykunst
2004:11);
anxietyanduncertaintymanagementtheory(Gudykunst1994);
efectivegroupdecisionmaking(Oetzel1995;Gudykunst2004:
11);
integratedtheoryofinterethniccommunication(Kim1997,2004
inGudykunst2004:11).

3.Theoriesfocusingonidentitymanagement.
4.Theoriesfocusingoncommunicationnetworks.

AccordingtoChen(2014:19),theTriangularModelofIntercultural
CommunicationCompetenceindicatestheinterrelationofparticular
aspectsinaveryprecisewayanditsynthesisesthepreviousliterature.
Chen(2014:19)statesthatthethreesidesofthetriangularmodelrepre-
sentthethreeaspectsofcognition(asmanifestedbyinterculturalaware-
ness),afective(manifestedbyinterculturalsensitivity),andbehaviour
(manifestedbyinterculturalefectivenessoradroitness).Thusintercul-
turalcommunicationcannotbelimitedtothebehaviouralaspectonly,
