ancesofnon-Polishperformersweresomethingextraordinaryinthecontext
ofacompetitionwhichwas,afterall,aninternationalone.
TheChC’sorganisationalfaultswerealsomentionedinarticlesthat
summeduptheentireevent.MateuszGliński25wroteinthe“Muzyka”
monthly,ofwhichhewastheeditor-in-chief:
ItisnoteasytounderstandwhyFrance,GermanyandEnglandwerenotrepre-
sentedamongtheCompetitionparticipants.[ś]Forthefutureeditionstosatisfy
alltherationaldemands,theorganisersoughttodrawsuitableconclusionsfrom
thecriticalopinionsprovokedbysomeoftheorganisationalandtacticalshort-
comings.Firstandforemost,theyshouldcareforthepropagandawithmore
foresightandflexibility,andpopularisetheCompetitioninforeignmusiccir-
cles.Insomecountriestheannouncements[ś]werepublishedsolatethatpre-
paringforparticipation[ś]wasrenderedtotallyimpossiblealreadyatthestart.
Forthisreason,foreigncountrieswererepresented[ś](exceptfortheSoviet
Russia)inahighlyrandommanner[ś].Themake-upofthecompetitionjury
couldalsogiverisetoseriousreservations[ś].WhiletheabsenceofPaderewski
andOpieńskiwasjustifiedbypersonalcircumstances,theabsenceofMichałowski
(whoresignedatthelastmoment)andofŚliwińskiwasaformofdemonstration
whichoriginatedinoversensitiveartisticambitions.But,apartfromthesewell-
knownChopinexperts,otherswerealsomissing26.
Itisonlyveryrarelythatallthecommentatorsandtheaudienceofan
eventaresatisfiedwiththemake-upofthejury.Muchmoreunusualwas
theorganisers’approachtothequestionofrelationswiththecriticsand
reviewers.ThereisnoneedtodaytocommentonGliński’swonderingthat
criticsandreviewersweremissingfromthejury.Still,theattemptstolimit
thefreedomofthepresswerescandalousevenforthattime:
The[organisational]committeedidnotleaveanyplaceformusiccriticsinthe
Competitionjury,andevenexpresslydemanded(itwasawishannouncedbyits
president)thattheyshouldrefrainfromassessingtheparticipants’performances,
whichallegedlymightexertanunwelcomeinfluenceonthejurymembers.Both
thesedemandswereinappropriate[ś];representativesofmusiccriticismreported
ontheCompetitionproceedingsextensively,withtremendousamountofenergy
andtemperament.Despitethis,anddespitetheaudiencegatheredinthehallvehe-
mentlymanifestingitsopinionsaswell,thejurymemberssignificantlydiverged
