Nordidweattempttocollectalltheavailablebackstageanecdotesand
personalmemoriesoftheCompetitionparticipantsandjurors.Severalbooks
dedicatedtosuchmemorieshavebeenpublished,soourreaderscansatisfytheir
interestinthisrespect.Ontheotherhand,wehavehadnointentionofcreat-
ingadullrepertory.Thisiswhywehaveincludedmentionsofeventswhich
provethattheChCisnotonlyanoblecelebrationofart,butalsothework
offalliblepeoplewhohavetheirweaknesses,makemistakesandcommitblun-
ders.Ofmuchsignificancetotheimagethatwepresenthereisalsothereception
oftheCompetitioninthecollectiveconsciousnessofthePolishsociety,andthe
variousculturalinitiativesundertakeninthecontextoftheCompetition.
II.MethodologicalRemarksConcerningthe
InterpretationoftheChopinCompetition
asaCulturalPhenomenon
Inthelate20thandearly21stcenturies,theworld’shumanitieshavegone
throughahailofnewexperiencesandGturns’,oneofwhichwasaturn
towardanalysingperformingartsintheirphenomenologicalaspect.This
meansthat,ratherthanwritingtextsaboutothertexts,asithasbeendone
forthelasttwocenturies,academicexpertsintheartsbegantowriteabout
images,soundsandactivities.
Realisingthescaleofthequalitativechangebroughtaboutbyapplying
thismethodisnoteasy,sincethechangeisapparentlynotgreat.Thestudy
ofgraphicarts,music,theatreandfilmhasdevelopedforalongtimeand
ledtomajorachievements.Itmustbestressed,however,thatuntilthelast
decadesofthe20thcenturythosedisciplinesofstudytreatedtheirobjects
ofresearchastextsofaspecifickind,i.e.asentitiescharacterisedbyinher-
entandstablemeaningorsetofmeanings,whichcanbeidentifiedinthe
studiedmaterialasaresultofintellectualproceduresdefinedbytext-centred
humanitiesfocusedonliteraryandphilosophicaltextanalysis.
Thus,astudyoftheGtheatre’focusedontheprocessofstagingthelit-
erarytext,andsawallthetextual-descriptiveaccountsofthegivenproduc-
