LeGuinbuiltaworldwithmagicandwizardsthatdrasticallydiffers
fromEkumen.TheultimatestoryandthestartingpointinAWizardof
EarthseaisthehistoryofGed,ayoungboyatthebeginning,andanold
maninthelastbook.Gedisgiftedwithmagicalabilities,buthis
stubbornnessandunwillingnesstoobeytherulesgoverningtheworldof
magicbringmischieftohim.Heishuntedbyhisalter-ego,whosetrue
namehemustknowinordertoovercomehim.Thissagacontainsthemotif
ofatravellingpresent,whichconnectsthestorywiththeabovementioned
Taoistunderstanding.

magicGwhichwaslargelysexualandconcernedwithobtaininglonglife”

ofmagicmoreconsistentwiththeteachingsofLaoTsethantheTaoist
