“There’sachapintroubleinthewater.Overthere,
Sam.Icanjustseehishead.”
“Right!”saidSambriefly,andatonceturnedthe
boatinthedirectionwhereJimandtheboyashore
werepointing.HeandJimcouldjustseeahead
bobbingamongthewavesandtwoarmsbeatingthe
water.Theirownerhadevidentlybeencaughtbythe
tideandwasbeingsweptouttosea.
“Quick,Sam!”criedJim.“Quickly,orwe’llbetoo
late.He’sgoingunder.”
“DoingallIknow,”saidSam.Theboatlayrightover,
but,justbeforeshereachedthespotwherethe
swimmerwasstruggling,heflunguphisarmsand
vanished.
Jimdidnothesitateforasecond.Healreadyhadhis
coatandbootsoff,andnowhemadeagreatjumpand,
strikingthewaterwithinafewyardsofthespotwhere
theswimmerhaddisappeared,dived.Samflungthe
boatupintothewind,hauleddownthesail,andgot
outthesculls.Quickashewas,theboathaddrifted
somedistance,andhewaspullingdesperatelyback
whenhesawJim’sheadbobupnearlyfiftyyardsaway.
Therewasasharplittlesearunning,andSam,
glancingoverhisshoulder,sawthatJimhadhold
oftheotherfellow,butwashavinghisworkcutout
tokeephimup.Eachwavebrokeoverhishead,and
hewasswimmingwithonearmonly.
Sampulledlikeafuryandwasintime,butonlyjust
intime.HegrabbedJimbythecollarofhisshirtjust
ashewassinking,andgothimtotheboat.“Getthis
fellowin,”pantedJim.“Icanhangon.”
ThechapJimhadrescuedwasatallladofsixteen
orseventeen,and,strongashewas,itwasallSam
coulddotohaulhiminoverthestern,andbythetime
hegotJimaboardtheboatwashalffullofwater.Jim
