Introduction
Theaimofthisarticleistoinvestigatetheissueoftheuseofsports
exchangesbetweenstatestostrengthentheiralliance,aswiththeexample
ofcommuniststatesduringtheColdWar.Asamatteroffact,Sovietsports
officialsveryoftenimpliedthatoneoftherolesofsportwasto“consolidate
friendshipbetweennations.”1Thetruthofthisstatementmightbedoubtfulin
relationtotheUSSR’ssportsrelationswiththecapitaliststates,butinrespect
tosportscontactsbetweentheEasternEuropeancommunistcountriesthese
wordsappeartobeveryaccurate.WithintheEasternBloc,sportfunctioned
asatoolforstrengtheningthesocialistsystem,intheorybybroadening
Sovietinfluenceoveritssatellitestatesinculturalandsocialareas.Atthe
sametimesportservedtodemonstratethesuperiorityofcommunismtothe
outsideworld,byshowingtheunityofcommunistsocieties.2
Somekeytermsrelatingtothisissueneedclarification.Theutilisation
ofsportfordiplomaticreasonsisgenerallyassociatedwiththetermsports
diplomacy,whichisregardedasapartofpublicdiplomacy.3Therearethree
mainobjectivesofsportsdiplomacy:tobringstatesorsocietiescloser,touse
