ture,includingwordssuchas:emergent,conditional,folksy,amateurish,
oblivioustolimitations,andstructurallysubversive.
Allofthesedińerentaspectsultimatelyintersectwithinthefundamen-
talneedtounderstandandconferameaningupontheworld.
SimpleMeansinaComplexWorld
Wedonotunderstandtheworldaroundus.Teuthreatofmeaning-
lessness”8hangsoverusnotbecauseofwhoweare(uamateurs,”uremoved
fromthedecision-makingcentre,”etc.),butbecausenooneindividual
iscapableofgraspingtheworldinitsentirety.Teoverlapbetweentheex-
periencesofpeoplelivingalongsideoneanotherisgrowingeversmaller,
asisthescopeofindividualhumanexperience,limitedtoanincreasingly
narrowportionofthereality.Weareunabletoretracetheoriginsoftheob-
jectsweuseeveryday9ortheexplanationswetrustwhenitcomestoshap-
ingourworldview.10Inasocietyorganisedalongsuchlines,lifeismostly
basedaroundoutsourcingourowncompetences,includingoutsourcing
understanding.Wedonothavetounderstandeverything,becausewe
havepeopletounderstandforus.
