ThisismysecondbookontimeinShakespeare.TheDramaticPoten-
tialofTime,publishedbytheUniversityofSilesia(WydawnictwoUni-
wersytetuŚląskiego)in2002,wasbasedonmydoctoraldissertation,
whichIhadwrittenunderthesupervisionofProfessorMartaGibińska-
-MarzecanddefendedinJanuary2000.Onepartofthatbookoffered
acopiousintroductiontothetimeprobleminphilosophyandliterature,
andtodramatictimeinparticular.Thisintroductionwasfollowedbyade-
tailedanalysisofpoetictimeintheSonnetsandofthetransitionfrompo-
etictodramatictimeinthenarrativepoemLucrece.Thesecondpart,
devotedexclusivelytodrama,offeredinterpretationsoffiveplays:Love’s
Labour’sLost,All’sWellThatEndsWell,Macbeth,RomeoandJuliet,and1
intheroleofaconcludingchapter1TheTempest.Studiesoftwomore
comediesandtwomoretragedieshavesincebeenawaitingpublication.
ItisnottobethoughtthattheonlyreasonIhavedecidedtoprepare
anotherbookontimeinShakespearehasbeentopreventtheunpublished
materialfromaccumulatingmoredustthanitalreadyhas.Onre-exa-
miningtheseanalysesIcametotheconclusionthatachangeofapproach
wouldbejustified,thataninterpretivesynthesisofShakespeare)shan-
dlingoftimeisbothdesirableandfeasible.Thenewapproachconsistsin
analysingindividualplayswithaneyeuponlargerissuesanduniversal
themes,withaviewtoacomprehensiveunderstandingofthewayin
whichthedynamismofman)sengagementwithtimeanimatesShake-
speare)sdrama,indeedthedramaticgenreitself.Thisisroughlythesame
assayingthatthatengagementpenetrates1defineseven1thedramatic
genreassuch,regardlessofthevariousinflectionsofhumantemporality
acrossthedifferentshapesofdrama.Animatedbythisnewpurpose,
