(Warszawa2005).However,itshouldbenotedthatrecentworksfocusprimarily

onthecurrentstateofpublicregisters,treatingthequestionoftheiroriginas

asideissue.

Inthepreviousstudies,theproblemoftherelationshipbetweenthevarious

registerswasnotaddressedatall.Ifitwasdone,itconcernedpracticallyonlythe

issueofmutualcomplementarityoflandandmortgageregistersandcadastre.

However,suchconsiderationswerecarriedoutmainlywhendiscussingoneof

theseregisters,notconcentratingontherelationsbetweenthem.Thus,themain

emphasiswasputonlegalissuesratherthanonproblemsrelatedtothecollected

informationanditscirculation.

Itshouldbeemphasisedthatthelegalproblemsrelatingtoregistershave

beenraisedmanytimes.Inprinciple,suchconsiderationsweretakenupeach

timeanewlegalstatewasintroduced.Subsequentdiscussions,however,focused

mainlyoncommentingonnewsolutionsorindicatingdiﬀerencesbetweenthe

newandoldlegalstates.Intheﬁrstplace,thisapproachgavethemapractical

character,ascompendiaofknowledgeforoﬃcialsandlawyers,leavinglittle

roomforconsiderationsofamoregeneralnature.

Thequestionofthesystematicnatureoftheregistersthusremainedoutside

themainstreamofpreviousconsiderations.InPolishliterature,thisaspectis

mainlyhighlightedbyAgnieszkaGryszczyńskainherworkRejestrypubliczne.

concernonlymodernregistersmaintainedprimarilythroughICTsystems.

Thisapproachcertainlyseemedsuﬃcientfromalegalaswellasahistorical

pointofview,atleastaslongasaccesstorecords,whetherstillinexistenceor

alreadyconstitutingarchives,remainedbasicallyrestrictedtoresearchersand

administrativestaﬀonly.Nowadays,however,whenaccesstothearchivesis

muchmoreopenandhundredsofusersperyeararesearchingforhistorical

information,itseemsnecessarytoalsoconsidertheissueoftherelationship

betweenthevariousregisters.Forthisreason,thispaperisaddressedprimarily

tothehistoricalcommunityandallthoseinvolvedwitharchivesandarchival

records.Theauthorhopes,however,thatitwillalsobeusefultorepresentatives

ofothersocialsciencesandhumanitieswhowillbeabletoﬁndinoneplace

basicknowledgeaboutPrussianpublicregisters,thecirculationofinformation

betweenthemandtheirsigniﬁcanceforcontemporarysolutions.
