PREFACE
Tismonographisoneofmanypublicationsresultingfromtheprogramofre-
searchandteachingandalsothegeneraldevelopmentoftheFacultyofPhysical
CultureandHealthPromotionattheUniversityofSzczecin,Poland.Teauthor
ofthemonograph,awellknownscholarspecializinginhistoricalandcultural
issuesofsportandphysicaleducation,haspublishedintherecentpastsuchsig-
nificantworksas,forinstance,theWorldSportsEncyclopediaunderUNESCO
patronageinseverallanguageversions,andmostrecentlyaHistoryofSport,so
farwithfourinternationalreviews1,despitethefactthatitiswritteninPolish,
andisonlynowbeingpreparedforitsEnglishlanguageversion.Apartfrom
eighteenpublishedbooks,ProfessorLipońskihasauthorednumerouslectures
deliveredondiferentoccasionsattheannualconferencesoftheBritishSociety
ofSportsHistoryaswellasanumberofuniversitiesandscholarlycentres,such
astheInternationalOlympicAcademyinAncientOlympia,Greece.Temajor-
ityoftheselectureswerelaterprintedindiferentproceedingsorinternational
academicjournalssuchastheBritishuInternationalJournaloftheHistoryof
Sport,”uEuropeanSportsHistoryReview”ortheGermanuStadion.Zeitschrif
fürdieGeschichtedesSport.”
Whatisstrikinginallthesepublicationsistheircoherenceandclearhuman-
isticline,touchingdiferentaspectsofsportshistoryandculture.Atthesame
timetheyconstituteanobviousalthoughdispersedmonographicapproach,
whichhasdeprivedthemofacombinedimpact.Collectingthesepublications
intooneprintedunitseemedtomesoobviousandnatural,thatIsuggestedthat
ProfessorLipońskiprepareonecoherentmonographmadeupofaselectionof
themostimportantofhislecturesandpapersconcerningthemostimportant
issuesofcontemporarysport,whetherinternational,EastEuropeanorspecifi-
