ofcaudledrunkeveryday.241WhentheyoungestdaughterofGeorgeIII,
PrincessAmelia,wasborn,theceremonyofcaudle-drinkinglastedfortwo
weeksfrom10a.m.tonooneveryday.Anindividualwhotookpartinthe
ceremonydescribesitthus:
It[caudle]wasservedinthespaciousroomnextthepresence
chamber,inSt.James’sPalace.Itwasdrawnfromtwolarge
boilersplacedbehindabar,byalady,andthengiventotwo
ofthegentlemenoftheHouseholdinfull-dress,andbythem
tothecompany,onsplendidsilversalvers.Thecupswhich
heldthecaudleheldaboutaquarterofapinteach.There
wasbothbrownandwhite,ofwhichthepersontowhom
itwaspresentedmadechoice.AnotheroftheHousehold
handedasliceofseedandplumcaketothecompany,who
havingbeenthusregaled,weredirectedtoleavethechamber
immediatelytomakeroomforothers.242
Somehistoriansclaimthatby1770uthedoctorsoutlawedcaudle”,243
butattheRoyalCourtcaudle-drinkingsurvivedatleastuntil1841
althoughitisdiffculttosayhowcommonitwasbythen.InNovember
1840,LordLevesonwasatBuckinghamPalacewhenQueenVictoria
gavebirthtoherfrstchildandhewasinvitedtodrinkcaudlewith
theLady-in-WaitingandMaidsofHonour.
