broachthesubjecttohimagain.Thesedifficulties,however,sofar
fromabatingmydesire,onlyaddedfueltotheflame.Idetermined
togoatallhazards;and,havingmadeknownmyintentions
toAugustus,wesetaboutarrangingaplanbywhichitmight
beaccomplished.InthemeantimeIforborespeakingtoany
ofmyrelationsinregardtothevoyage,and,asIbusiedmyself
ostensiblywithmyusualstudies,itwassupposedthatIhadabandoned
thedesign.Ihavesincefrequentlyexaminedmyconductonthis
occasionwithsentimentsofdispleasureaswellasofsurprise.The
intensehypocrisyImadeuseofforthefurtheranceofmyproject—an
hypocrisypervadingeverywordandactionofmylifeforsolong
aperiodoftime—couldonlyhavebeenrenderedtolerabletomyself
bythewildandburningexpectationwithwhichIlookedforwardtothe
fulfilmentofmylong-cherishedvisionsoftravel.
Inpursuanceofmyschemeofdeception,Iwasnecessarilyobliged
toleavemuchtothemanagementofAugustus,whowasemployedfor
thegreaterpartofeverydayonboardtheGrampus,attendingtosome
arrangementsforhisfatherinthecabinandcabinhold.Atnight,
however,weweresuretohaveaconferenceandtalkoverourhopes.
Afternearlyamonthpassedinthismanner,withoutourhittingupon
anyplanwethoughtlikelytosucceed,hetoldmeatlastthathehad
determineduponeverythingnecessary.IhadarelationlivinginNew
Bedford,aMr.Ross,atwhosehouseIwasinthehabitofspending
occasionallytwoorthreeweeksatatime.Thebrigwastosailabout
themiddleofJune(June,1827),anditwasagreedthat,adayortwo
beforeherputtingtosea,myfatherwastoreceiveanote,asusual,
fromMr.Ross,askingmetocomeoverandspendafortnightwith
RobertandEmmet(hissons).Augustuschargedhimselfwiththe
inditingofthisnoteandgettingitdelivered.Havingsetout
assupposed,forNewBedford,Iwasthentoreportmyself
tomycompanion,whowouldcontriveahiding-placeformeinthe
Grampus.Thishiding-place,heassuredme,wouldberendered
sufficientlycomfortableforaresidenceofmanydays,duringwhich
