thenalsousinanendlessmazeofinconclusiveness,or,torefertothe
presentvolume)stitle,inastateofurbana-maze-ment.Itisonlybysee-
ingandsayingwhatthecityisnotthatitsspiritualandhistioriosophic
senseappears,butthentheveryactofsayingwhatthecityisnotis
alreadylogicallyflawed,fornotknowingwhatitwasmakesitimpos-
sibletotrulyknowwhatitwasnot.Tus,themedievallyunderstood
sensusmoralis,thatis,themoralsenseofTeRuinasapoemandthe
moralsenseoftheruinsperceivedbythenarrator(aswellasbyour
