Thebookistheproceedingsvolumeofthenationalacademicconference,en-
titled:IntheIconsofPower,PeopleandIdeasoftheAncientWorld.Theconference
washeldonSeptember22-24,2011,intheSilesiansceneryofUstrońinthe
BeskidyMountains.ItwashostedbytheDepartmentofAncientHistoryat
theUniversityofSilesiainKatowice.
Theconferenceisoneoftheseriesofsimilarmeetings,regularlyorganized
formanyyearsnow,byparticularUniversitycentersundertheauspicesof
theCommissionforAncientHistory(PolishHistoricalSociety).Participants
fromalmostalluniversitiesinPoland,aswellasfromotherschoolsinour
country,havetakenpartinthisconference.Therefore,wewouldliketopre-
senttheReaderswithaselectednumberofpapers(outofmanyinteresting
ones),whichwerepresentedduringtheconference.
Thevolumepresentstheresearchresultsinvariousdisciplinesofknow-
ledgeexploringthebygoneeraoftheMediterraneanterritory.Therefore,
theReaderwillfindarticlesfromthefieldofhistory,aswellasfromabroad
spectrumofrelateddisciplines(e.g.archeology,classicalstudies,religious
studiesorarthistory).Oneaspectshouldbeemphasized,thatis,thefactthat
anumberoftextswerewritenbyyoungergenerationofPolishresearchers
inancienthistory.
Theterm“icon”appearsbothinthetitleoftheconference,aswellas
inthetitleofthispublication,anditstandsforasymbolofissuesrelated
toessentialmatersthatruledtheancientworld.Theseareissuesofancient
power,peoplewhoheldit,aswellaspresentationofextremelyplenteous
worldofideasthatthosebygonedayswerebrimmingwith.Thelaterone
isespeciallyclosetotheConferenceOrganizers.TheDepartmentofAncient
HistoryattheUniversityofSilesiainKatowiceconductsresearchintothe
ideologicalmatersofantiquity.Itpredominantlyconcernsthenumismatic
