invisible,marginalised,orforgotten.Tiscross-cuttingapproachtodocumenting
theHIV/AIDSepidemicinEuropeshedslightonthedilerentmodesthrough
whichawidevarietyofactivistsfromacrossthebroaderEuropeanregionhaveen-
gagedintheirnegotiationswithanepidemicthathasfurtherthreatenedtheircom-
munities,imaginedfuturesandconditionsofliving.
HIV/AIDS
TeHIV/AIDSepidemicwasselectedasafocusoftheEUROPACHprojectdue
tothelived,narrated,andanalysedcomplexitiesofemotionsandpoliticsthatithas
broughtforth.Itwasalsochosenfortheprofoundinfluenceithasbeenarguedto
havehadonthepoliticsofhealth,onnotionsoftheself,andontheconditions,pe-
ripheries,andpossibilitiesofcommunityidentificationandbelonging(Chan2015;
Rose2007;Squire2013;Youngetal.2019).Inotherwords,toparaphraseTamás
fromthequoteabove,weinvestedyearsofresearchintoinvestigatingthepolitics
ofthisepidemicduetothecommunitypowerithasbeensaidtoproduce,unleash,
andmakemanifest.Tishasbeenallthemoreurgentandmomentousbecausethe
individualsandcommunitiesthathavebeenmostimpactedbyHIVandAIDS
havetypicallybeen,duetoexistingmoral,legal,andsocialnorms,positionedat
andlargelyconfinedtothemarginsorperipheriesofsociety.Undoubtedly,HIV
andAIDShaveproducedorcontributedtoexclusion,illnessanddeath,andsocial
andpoliticalabandonment.Forthosemostexcludedfromsocialandpoliticalrec-
ognition,thepoliticsoftheepidemichavealso,attimes,createdanunprecedented
routeforaccessingrights,havingone)svoiceheard-and,forsome,evenmodesof
survival.
IthasbeenarguedthattheHIVepidemichasbeenground-breakinginterms
ofactivistengagementsinfieldsofhealthgovernanceandsocialpolicies.Suchen-
gagementscontributedtotherenegotiationofconceptsofrightsandresponsibil-
itiesandtoopeningunexpectedspacesforindividualsandcommunitiestohave
aninfluenceonthepoliciesthatshapetheirlivesandlivedrealities.Ourguiding
questionsduringthisresearchwerethus:whatconceptsofcitizenship,understood
tomeanamalgamsofempiricallydocumentedrights,responsibilitiesandforms
