Whiletheutility,nobilityandbeneﬁtsofthesemovementsareunquestionable,

theyalsoleadtoaparadoxicalsituation:insteadofcriticising,deconstructing,and

changingthesystemthattheyarediscontentwith,they-forlackofabetterop-

tion-mustactivelycontributetoitspropagationundermoral,publichealthand

bio-politicalimperatives.

ItisreasonabletohopethatoneoftheresultsoftheCOVID-19pandemiccan

betheaccumulationofasufcientcriticalmassofpatientadvocatesandactivists.

Tiscriticalmasscanorganisethemselveselectivelyenoughtochallengethesys-

temthathasconsistentlyputthe“market,”the“economy”andthe“healthofcom-

panies”(capital)beforethehealthofcitizens.Teactivetherapeuticcitizenshipof

HIVpatientsandtheirexperienceinthistypeofworkmayprovidegoodtemplates

fortheworkandchangesthatareneeded.

However,wecanalsoobservethebeneﬁcialelectofself-empowermentthrough

learningandeducationintheprocessoftacklingstigmaanddiscriminationaswell

ascoping.TisexplainswhypatienteducationprogrammesliketheEuropeanPa-

tients)AcademyforTerapeuticInnovation(EUPATI)12orthePatientFocused

MedicinesDevelopment13initiativehavebeensosuccessful,andthisisalsowhyan

increasingnumberofpatientorganisationsinvestintheirownpatienteducation

programmes.

Teconsciousacknowledgmentandincorporationofemotionsintothework,es-

peciallycapacity-buildingactivities,ofpatientgroupsmayolerasolutionformov-

ingawayfromthepressuresofmarket-mindedthinkingandtheinevitablelossof

coreobjectivesthataresacriﬁcedtomoregrowthandproﬁt-making.Movingaway

frombusinessmetricsandfollowingastrategythatisdilerentfromthestandard

practicesandprocessesinacapitalisteconomymaybemorepurposefulandallow

morespaceandtimeforthetargetedprocessinganduseofemotionsinthework

thatpatientgroupsdo.

Embracingthetasksassignedtoandassumedbythemwithdignity,amoral

stanceandpoliticalsavvymayleadtodeeperreformsinhowhealthismanaged

acrosstheglobe.Inotherwords:theclassconsciousnessofpatientsmustbepropa-

gatedanddeveloped.ContrarytotheCartesiandivisionofbodyandreason,emo-

tionsandrationality,patientcommunitiesareinagoodpositiontoharnessthe

emotional“capital”andknowledgetheypossessbyblurringtherigidlinesbetween
