Abstract
STRANGEIMAGES
Thetextpresentsadoubleinterpretation(homoeroticandhomophobic)ofacommer-
cialimageofthe“renaissanceyouth”setinthecontextofthe1980sandthetwilight
ofCommunistPoland.Thesubversivepotentialofhomoeroticreadingoftheimage,
onwhichsomewhereinthelate1980ssomeonewroteAIDS,ispresentedagainstthe
backgroundofitshistory.Thehand-madeinscriptionishereinterpretednotonlyas
ahomophobicactbutfirstandforemostasanoperationaimingatestablishingthe
senseoftheimageinsuchawaysothatthesubversionfoundedonhomoeroticreading
iscancelledandthe“renaissanceyouth”becomesa“sickfaggot.”Asaresultofthis
operation,theimagestartstocreatetheonlylegitimateviewofhomosexuality,with
connotationsofsickness,verysimilartoimagesofAIDSthatappearedinthehomo-
phobicpublicdiscourseoftheReaganeraintheUSA.
