althoughnotthemostwidespread,isthebasisofmostofthevarious
transliterationsystemsusedforUrdutoday,andoffersacoherentcompromise
betweenUrduspellingandpronunciation.Thetwomodificationsintroducedin
thisstudyare:therepresentationofnasalvowelswithatilde(̃)abovethe
nasalisedvowel(thus,kitóbẽinsteadofkitóbeṅ),andtherepresentationofthe
allophonicsoundpairsofu/ŏandi/ĕaccordingtocommonpronunciation(thus,
ṣĕḥatinsteadofṣiḥat,andmŏhójirinsteadofmuhójir).
PropernamesandotherUrduwordswithanestablishedEnglishspelling
(likemostgeographicalandplacenames,butalsowordslikeEid,Mohajir,Urdu,
Bhutto,katchiabadi)aretranscribedinbracketsontheirfirstappearance,and
afterwardsrenderedintheirusualEnglishspelling.Thenamesofauthorsare
alsorenderedintheirusualEnglishspelling,withtheexceptionofwhenthey
appearinreferencetosourcesintheUrdulanguage.
TheoccasionallyoccurringPunjabiandSindhiwordsorphrasesaretrans-
literatedaccordingtotheaforementionedUrdutransliterationrules.
