Hencehepursuedadeliberatepolicyfortheoutbreakofawarwhich

wouldleadtotheemergenceofaGreatSerbia.Inthissensehisac-

tivitiescanhardlyberegardedasanythingbutprovocation.Hisclose

contactswiththeRussianintelligenceandsecretservices,whichhad

aconsiderableinﬂuenceinBelgrade,wereintendedtoguarantee

Russia’ssolidarity.SomehistoriansbelievethatultimatelyApiswas

guidedbytheGermanintelligenceservice,whichwascarryingout

Berlin’spolicytotriggertheoutbreakofwarandmanoeuvreVienna

intomilitaryengagement.Butthisisonlyoneofthesixmostfre-

quentlycitedhypothesesonthelinksbetweentheSarajevanconspir-

atorsandtheoutsideworld.AnothertheorysaysthatPrincip’shand

wassteeredbythoseViennesepoliticianswhodidnotwanttosee

FranzFerdinandonthethrone,whichiswhytheydeliberatelychose

theday,28thJune,toprovoketheSerbs,andandweredeliberately

negligentabouthavingtherouteproperlysecured.

Teconspiratorswerenotcold-bloodedimplementersofsome-

oneelse’sorders;neitherweretheyhiredkillers,butromantics,

deeplyconvincedthatviolencecouldandshouldbeusedtoachieve

superioraims.Teydidnotcalmlyreckonuptheodds.LiketheRus-

siananarchists,theysaidkillingtyrantswasworthwhiletoliberate

thepeopleandmakethemhappy.Teybelongedtoagenerationof

fanaticsreadytosettheworldonﬁretogetwhattheywanted.In

theirprivatelivestheypractisedtherevolutionarycodeofasceti-

cism.Somewereteetotallersandabstinentinmattersoflove,treat-

ingadeclarationofloveforawomanasasignofweaknessandaslur

onfemaledignity.Afertheassassinationtheyclaimedtheydidnot

regretit.Onbeingsentenced,Čabrinovićwrotethatiftheheirto

thethronehadnotcometoBosnia,hewouldhavefoundandslain

himinVienna.HestressedthatforSerbsthevisithadbeenanovert

provocationasFranzFerdinandhadcometoobservemanoeuvres

heldonSerbiansoil,andagainsttheSerbianpeople.
