Thisbook,consistingofsixchapters,inscribesitselfinthefieldof
diachroniccorpuslinguisticsandistheresultofresearchfocusedonfinding
newcorpustoolsforsolvingtheproblemofclauseambivalenceinOldEnglish.
Theeffortsresultedinthecreationofanauthoredresearchmethodology
allowingforsystematicclassification,description,automaticsearchandanalysis
ofambivalentclauses,whichformaseparatesyntacticcategorycalledpara-
hypotaxis,onthebasisofaspecificmanuallycompiledcorpusconsistingof
twomanuscriptsoftheAnglo-SaxonChronicle:manuscriptAandmanuscript
E.TheAnglo-SaxonChroniclewaschosenbecauseinthescientificliterature
itisconsideredtohaveapurelynativecharacterandtohavebeenwrittenin
colloquialstyle.ThusthetypeofOldEnglishusedinitismorenaturalthan
thatfoundintranslatedworks.Notincidentally,theoldestmanuscript(A),also
referredtoastheParkerChronicleortheWinchesterChronicle,iscompared
withtheyoungestone(E),alsoreferredtoasthePeterboroughChronicleor
theLaudManuscript,becauseitwasassumedthatthecomparisonofthesetwo
manuscriptswouldallowforamoreinterestingconfrontation.
Theconceptofpara-hypotaxisistraditionallyappliedinRomancelinguistics
inrelationtotheOldItaliansequencesofdependentclausesfollowedbymain
clausesintroducedbycertaincoordinatingconjunctions.However,inthisbook
itreceivesadistinctmeaningbybeingidentifiedwithambivalence,whichisthe
keyissuehere.Inourview,para-hypotaxisisthephenomenonofambivalent
clauseswhichcanbefoundinanintermediatestageofthetransitionof
alanguagefromparataxistohypotaxisorviceversa.Sincetheseclausesare
ambivalent,weproposethattheybeanalysedintwodifferentways,namely
eitherasmainclausesbeinginparatacticrelationtotheimmediatelypreceding/
followingclauses,orasdependentonesbeinginhypotacticrelationtothe
