thischapterwealsodiscusstheproblemsofmodernpunctuationinEnglish
mediaevaltextsandofambivalentOldEnglishclauses.Attheendofthischapter
wediscussambiguity,somewaysofresolvingit,andmakeanintroductionto
thefollowingchapters.
InChapter2wediscusshowweourselvesseepara-hypotaxisandsuggest
thatitshouldbeapproachedinadynamicway.Wedistinguishtwolarge
subcategoriesofpara-hypotaxis,namelyStaticIntrinsicPara-Hypotaxisand
MobileIntrinsicPara-Hypotaxis.Weemploythefollowingacronymsfor
therespectivetypesofpara-hypotaxis:SIPH-taxis(orPH-siph)andMIPH-
taxis(orPH-miph).WithinSIPH-taxiswedistinguishSIPHclausesand
SIPHelements,andanalogicallywithinMIPH-taxisMIPHclausesandMIPH
elements.Inordertocomprisebothtypesofpara-hypotaxisinamoregeneral
way,wesometimesemploythetermsPH-taxis,PHclausesandPHelements.
Apartfrommakinganintroductiontothesetwokindsofpara-hypotaxis,inthis
chapterwepresentthebasicsofourannotatedcorpusandthewayweusedit
intheanalysis.
InChapter3wediscussinmoredetailtheproblemofStaticIntrinsicPara-
Hypotaxis(SIPH-taxis).InSIPH-taxisweidentify24typesofSIPHclauses
onthebasisofdifferentSIPHelementsthatintroducethem.ASIPHelement
alwaysbelongstoitscorrespondingSIPHclausenomatteriftheclausein
whichitappearsisapproachedfromthepointofviewofparataxisorfrom
thepointofviewofhypotaxis.Moreover,apartfromprovidingaclassification
andatheoreticaldescriptionofthedifferentkindsofSIPHclauses,weprovide
numerousexamplesfromtheAnglo-SaxonChronicleforillustration.Towards
theendofthischapterwegathertogetherallthedataobtainedforeachkindof
SIPHclausesandestablishthemaximumrangeofthecorridorofambivalence
thattheSIPHclausesoffertogether,bothintheParkerChronicleandinthe
PeterboroughChronicle.
InChapter4wediscussinmoredetailthephenomenonofMobileIntrinsic
Para-Hypotaxis(MIPH-taxis).Thereare24differentkindsofambivalentclauses
thatbelongtoMIPH-taxis.ThereisasignificantdifferencebetweenSIPH-
taxisandMIPH-taxis,namelyaMIPHelementdoesnotalwaysbelongtoits
correspondingMIPHclausebutitchangesitspositiondependingonwhether
theMIPHclauseisapproachedfromthepointofviewofparataxisorfromthe
pointofviewofhypotaxis;itbelongstoitscorrespondingMIPHclauseonlyin
hypotaxis.Moreover,aswasthecasewithSIPHclauses,weprovideadetailed
classificationandtheoreticaldescriptionofthedifferentkindsofMIPHclauses.
WealsoillustratethembymeansofnumerousexamplesfromtheAnglo-Saxon
Chronicle,wediscussthecorridorofambivalenceofferedbyeachkindofthe
MIPHclauses,andfinallyweestablishthemaximumrangeofthecorridorof
