InChapter5wediscussthephenomenonofExtended-Para-Hypotaxis
(EPH-taxis).However,unlikewasthecasewithSIPH-taxisandMIPH-taxis,we
describeitinverygeneraltermsandleavethereaderwithsomeimplications
forfurtherstudy.Asamatteroffact,EPH-taxisisnottruepara-hypotaxis
becauseEPHclausesarenotintrinsicallyambivalent,unlikeSIPHclauses
andMIPHclauses.WhatcanbeambivalentinEPH-taxis,however,areEPH
elementsbutonlypartlyandthispartialambivalencehasnoinfluenceuponthe
statusoftheclausesinvolvedbecausetheyarealwaysunambivalent.EPH-taxis
alwaysimpliesamutualco-existenceofatleasttwoclauses,oneofwhichis
unambivalentlymainandtheotherisunambivalentlydependent,nomatter
iftheirEPHelementsareapproachedfromthepointofviewofparataxisor
hypotaxis.Moreover,weconsiderEPH-taxisasbeingofminorimportanceand
thatiswhywediscussitverygenerallyanddonotestablishthemaximum
rangeofthecorridorofambivalenceofferedbythem.Nevertheless,itwould
beinterestingtodoananalogicalanalysisofEPHclausestotheonewedid
withrespecttoSIPHandMIPHclauses,andseewhatthefinaloutcomeof
thisanalysiswouldbe.
InChapter6wemeasuretheextentoftheinfluenceofthedualanalysis
ofPHclausesandwearriveatsomeconclusionsandimplications.Whenwe
approachthePHclausesfromthepointofviewofparataxis,theyaretreated
asmainandneedtobeaddedtothetotalnumberofunambivalentmain
clauses.Ontheotherhand,whenthesamePHclausesareapproachedfrom
thepointofviewofhypotaxis,theyaretreatedasdependentandneedtobe
addedtothetotalnumberofunambivalentdependentclauses.Bothprocedures
offerveryinterestingresultsanditcanbeobservedhowthepictureofword
orderconfigurationschangesintheAnglo-SaxonChronicledependingonthe
approach.Wearebasicallyconcernedwithcalculatingthepercentagesandwith
establishingtheproportionofPHclausestreatedasmaintotheunambivalent
mainclauses,andtheproportionofPHclausestreatedasdependenttothe
unambivalentdependentclausesinbothmanuscriptsoftheAnglo-Saxon
Chronicle.Attheendofthischapterwearriveatfurtherconclusionsanddiscuss
someproblemsandimplicationsofourstudy.
