Theunderstandingofeventsandexperiencesfromthepastrequires
historicalempathy(EndacottandBrooks2013;seealsoWoroniecka
1996,1998/2003).Theresearchershouldthinkaboutthisempathyas
ahistoricalconcept;itwasdifferentlyunderstoodatthebeginningof
20thCenturyandinmid-20thCentury.2Moreover,historicalempathy
shouldtakeintoconsiderationthefollowingthreeaspects:
1.H-HistoricalContextualization-atemporalsenseofdifference
thatincludesdeepunderstandingofthesocial,political,andcultural
normsofthetimeperiodunderinvestigationaswellasknowledge
oftheeventsleadinguptothehistoricalsituationandotherrelevant
eventsthatarehappeningconcurrently.
2.-PerspectiveTaking-understandingofanother’spriorlived
experience,principles,positions,attitudes,andbeliefsinorderto
understandhowthatpersonmighthavethoughtaboutthesituation
inquestion.
3.-AffectiveConnection-considerationforhowhistoricalfigures’
livedexperiences,situations,oractionsmayhavebeeninfluencedby
theiraffectiveresponsebasedonaconnectionmadetoone’sown
similaryetdifferentlifeexperiences”(EndacottandBrooks2013:43).
Understandingthehistoricalcontextisveryimportanttosituatethe
livedexperienceandactionsoftheindividualplusfeelingtheaffective
experiencesreferredtoherownlifeexperiences.However,wethink
thatthataspectshouldbeconsideredmorecarefully.Itshouldbedone
throughthecontemplativeautoanalysisoftheresearcher,toshowif
herlivedexperienceshaveanythingcommonwiththeexperiences
oftheanalysedindividuals.Ifwedonotdothis,itisdifficulttobe
empathetichistorically.Ifwedoso,wecandevelopsomeinsights
intothepersonalexperiencessituatedinthehistoricalperspective.
Moreover,bycontemplativeautoanalysiswecanseethatthepast
experiencesoftheOtherandourattitudestothemcouldteachus
abouttoday’ssituation,whichweexperienceinourownlife.
Contemplationwasapartofstoicphilosophy.Wecouldlearn
alotoflessonsfromthisphilosophy.Antiquetraditionisstillalive
(Hadot1987/1995,1998),evenifwedonotagreewithaparticular
view.Thestoicphilosophyelaboratedverywelltheethicalissuesof
humanlife.Tobehaveethicallyweneedtobemastersofourselves
andcontrolouremotionsandstyleoflife.Todoso,weshouldpractice
