i.e.additionalsynonymthatdidnotbringanythingnewtoit.
Atthatperiod,Iassumedonlyoneestablishedversionofthetitleof
Al-Ǧāḥiẓ’swork:Kitābal-bayānwaat-tabyīn,followingthemost
renownedauthorityinthefield–FrenchspecialistinArabicstudies
Ch.Pellat[3],andfollowingI.J.Kračkovskij[4],Russianspecialistin
Arabicstudies,theoreticianofArabicpoeticsfromDamascusAmdjad
Trabulsi[5],aswellasfollowingEgyptianeditors:Sandūbīand‘Abd
as-SallāmM.Hārūn,whobasedtheirstudiesonthemanuscriptkept
inCairo.MycheckingtheAl-Ǧāḥiẓentryinsubsequenteditionsof
EncyclopaediaofIslam
confirmedthatversionofthetitle[6].Itwas
onlyC.Brockelmannwho,inbrackets,providedanotherversionof
transcriptionofthesecondpartofthetitle,withoutanycommentson
it:Bayānwatabyīn(tabayyun)[7].Noneoftheaforementioned
researcherstranslatedthetitleofthework,despitetranslatingother
titles.Itseemedtheywerenotsurewhatitscorrecttranslationshould
be.
IpassedmydoctoralthesisexaminationinAl-Ǧāḥiẓ’sApproachto
RhetoricandStylisticsin1970.
Onitsbasis,Ipublishedtwoarticlesinthe“Rocznik
Orientalistyczny”[8]andsuspendedmystudiesonAl-Ǧāḥiẓforalong
time,focusingonstudyingandpublishingmanyworksinthefieldof
contemporaryArabicliterature.
In1990,Iwasinvitedtotheinternationalconference“Schoolof
AbbasidStudies”heldatUniversityofSt.AndrewsinScotland.The
organizers,beinginterestedinmyearlierarticles,askedmetogive
alectureonAl-Ǧāḥiẓ.Myspeech:SomeAspectsofAl-Ǧāḥiẓ’s
RhetoricalTheory,wasappreciatedandadmittedtoprinting.[9]Two
yearslater,similarinterestwasgiventomyspeechatthesubsequent
conference‘SchoolofAbbasidStudies’:Al-ǦāḥiẓonPoetryand
Poets.[10]AtSt.AndrewsImetworld-renownedresearchersoccupied
withstudiesontheAbbasidperiod,suchas:WolfhardtHeinrichs,
