planes.Earlieronforalreadytowardstheendofthe19thc.there
appearedaspecifictypeofrevival:withinhistoricism,thereoccurred
whatiscalledneo-Baroque.ThankstoarehabilitationoftheBaroqueas
afull-fledgedhistoricalstyle,undertakenintheeightiesofthiscentury,
aconsciousimitationofBaroqueformsbecamepossibleandindeed
desirable.Inthecaseofarchitecture,whatbecameparticularlyimportant
wasthediscoveryoftheexpressivevaluesofthisstylewhichallowed
onetocombineitsformswiththeselectedtypesofbuildings,within
theconceptionofthesocalledarchitectureparlante.Theneo-Baroque
shouldbedistinguishedfromthe19thc.post-Baroquewhichoccurred
intheconservativecreativecirclesorelseinthoseareasofhandicraft
whichwerepronetotraditionalism;thisphenomenonwasalsoknown
inotherhistoricalperiodsandwasreferredtoasthephenomenonof
stylisticbackwardness.
Amoreinteresting,moreautonomousbutstillartisticallyvalidtrend
intheartofthelatterhalfofthe20thcentury,canbereferredtoasHBa-
roquism”,tousethetermcoinedbyMichelRagon.Thelatterischarac-
terizedbytheartists’useoftheHBaroque”expression(usuallywithout
beingawareofitsHBaroque”character)byresortingtoformalmeans
ofexpressionspecifictotheircontemporarytimes.Unlikeinthecaseof
neo-Baroque,wearedealingherewiththerejectionoftheretrospective
attitudewhichharksbacktowhatishistorical;thelattertrendischar-
acterizedbyaresignationfromsearchingfordirectformalpatternsin
theartoftheBaroque;ifartistsdidlookforinspirationintheBaroque,
theydidsoverydiscreetly,sometimestheywerenotevenawareofdo-
ingso.Thelattertrendwhichistheconsequenceoftheartists’creative
attitudeandisfreefromimitativetendenciesseemstobemostsimilar
tothefinalphasesofvariousstylisticformations,sometimesreferred
toasHbaroques”;suchatrendseemstocorrespondmostcloselytothe
conceptofHmodernistBaroque”.
Asitusuallyhappensinthecaseofsuchandsimilaracademicses-
sions,whoseorganizersgranttheparticipantscompletefreedomtoshape
theprogrammeoftheconference,thepaperspresentedinCracow,didnot
createalogicallyplannedwhole,whereasthepresentationsofbroader
theoreticalissuesoccurredbutrarely.Yet,likepiecesinamosaic,the
presentedpapers,oftenconcerningnarrow,specializedresearchissues,
andfocusingonindividualartistsorevenonsingleworks,altogether
makeupthepictureofthepresent-dayunderstandingofthetermHBa-
roque”.
