Twentyorthirtystudentswereinvolvedintheinitialinvitation-onlyMay
morningexpeditionthatgaverisetotheDisseminators,andtheymetquietlyat
dawnatvariouspointsinthetownandwalkedtothehillsnorthofWilno,

authorities-launchedtheTowarzystwoPrzyjaciółPożytecznejZabawy[Society
ofFriendsofUsefulRecreation].Therewereperhapseventually100members
ofthisDisseminatingassociation,organisedinspecialistgroupsorcirclesin
eachfaculty,eachwithaboutadozenmembers,andreferredtobythecoloursof
therainbow.ThecircleinthefacultyofMathematicsandPhysics,which

clumsy,broad-shoulderedSzerok-Teodor(orBożydar,thePolishequivalent,
whichhelikedtouse)Łoziński,whocamefromthesameVolhyniandistrictas
Beniowski,fromŻytomierz.LikeTomaszZan,TeodorŁozińskifundedhis
studiesbyprovidingprivatetuitioninMathematics;Zan,whowasinterested
