encetoAncientIndiankingswhoproclaimedtheirlawsbyturningawheel,
theirroyalinsignia.ComprehensiveBuddha’steachingsarecomparedto
awell-stockedpharmaciststorehere,wherenooneisencouragedtocon-
sumeallavailablemedicaments,buttochoosetheonessuitableinapartic-
ularpersonalcontext.
TerstkindofBuddhismappealstopatientsinterestedinpersonalde-
velopmentandself-help,whichiswhyitiscalledHinayāna,aSmallVehi-
cle4.TemainteachingsonthisbasiclevelinvolveFourNobleTruths(Skt.
catvdridryasatydni)andteachingsonkarma,bothofwhichformafounda-
tionforallwaysofBuddhism.
InordertoelucidateadifferenceinapproachofBuddhatootherreli-
gions’founders,whopresentthemselvesasprophetsproclaimingtheword
ofGod,oftenacomparisonofTeAwakenedOnetoaphysicianisprovid-
ed.InthiscontexthisFourNobleTruths(Skt.catvdridryasatydni)canbe
seenasthefollowingdiagnosisandtreatment:
1.Tereissuffering.Teillness,oldageanddeathareinevitable.Condi-
tionedexperiencesarealwaysimpermanentandcanprovidenolast-
inghappiness.Sentientbeingsarethusinacyclic,involuntarypath-
ologicalstatesincetheydonotexperiencethehighesthappiness,
compassionandfreedomofenlightenment,comparedtowhicheven
themostelevated,conditionedexperiencesarelikesuffering.
