canencounterproductsmadeofadarkyellowtransparentfossilresinknownas

amber.Thenamesonlyindicatewheretheseresinsarefoundbutdonotreflect
theirgeneticaffinity,whichcouldbeclarifiedbyasharedorigin-basedname.
Atthebeginningofthe1990s,anewfossilresinwasdescribedinSarawak,
Malaysia,whereitisfoundinlargequantities.Itsdiscoverersgaveitthenameof
Borneoamber.Thisresin,sdepositsprovedtobemuchlargerthantheSambian
depositsofBalticamber.BorneoamberisafossilresinwhichresemblesEurope,s
glessite,althoughsomewhatdifferentparenttreeshavebeenattributedtoit.
Theterminologicalcomplexitieswhichfollowfromlanguagetraditionscan-
notbe,however,easilyresolved,whileresinswhicharefitforcraftingwilllong
continuetobedescribedasamberbythemarket.Thereisaseparateissueofthe
