sources,Justinianactuallylaunchedalargescalebuildingprogrammeinanum-
berofplacesinSyro-Palestine

Lookingatamap,alongandmassiverangeoftheAmanusMountains(to-
dayNurDaĝlari)caneasilybeseenencirclingtheAlexandrettabay(İskenderun
Körfezi)inalong,widecurve.Temountainsrunalonglongitudelines,stretch-
ingbetweentheMediterraneancoastandtheTaurusridge,andclearlyblocking
theaccesstoSyriafromthedirectionofAsiaMinor.Oneofthefewrelatively
convenientpassages,theonementionedbyProcopius,layabout15kmfrom
thesea,atanaltitudeof700mabovesealevel.OfenreferredtoastheSyrian
Gates,itisknowntodayastheBelenPass.Animportantcommunicationroute
existedtherelongbeforethereignofJustinianI.NorthoftheSyrianGates,there
wasanothermountainpass,usuallycalledtheAmanianGate(BahçeGeçidi).

3.Tusthemountains,despitebeing
2240mhighandreachingdowntothesea,oleredaccesstotheSyrianinterior.
TedescentfromtheSyrianGatesleddownontothevastAmukplain
which,extendingbetweentheMediterraneanSeaandthehillsinthecentral
partofthecountry,occupiedthenorth-westernpartofSyria(todaywithinTur-
key).Temostimportantcityoftheregion,andatthesametimethelargest
centreofthewholeofSyro-Palestine,wasAntiochontheOrontes.Intheera
ofthelateRomanEmpire,itwasaheavily-populatedcosmopolitanmetropolis,
themajortradingandartisancentre,reputedlyinhabitedbyasmanyasseveral
hundredthousandpeople.Destroyedbythepowerfulearthquakesof526and
528andravagedbythePersiansin540,intheseventhcenturyitsglorydays
wereover,althoughitstillplayedsomeeconomic,militaryandpoliticalrole.In
the30softhiscentury,EmperorHeracliususedthecityasthebasefromwhich
tocoordinatemilitaryactionagainsttheArabs
