PREFACE
Excessiveworkloadandfillingnotonlytimewithwork,butalsothecontents
ofthemind,hasnegativeconsequences.TheRomansdistinguishedtwotypes
ofactivities:negotiumandotium.Negotiumincludesallkindsofseriousand
responsibletasksundertakenforthefamilyandthecommunity,suchaseconomic,
religious,public,andpoliticalliabilities,includingearningmoneyinabusiness
andatwork,whileotiumisthetimefortheself,dedicatedtovariousformsof
intellectualactivity,personaldevelopment,entertainment,andfun.Oneofthe
consequencesofexcessiveworkloadandworkaholismisanimbalancebetween
workandleisure.Workremovestheexperiencedtension,buttakesincreasingly
moretime,notleavingenoughforrelaxationandpersonaldevelopment.
Ostensibly,thisisasafeactivity,notascriminogenicasdruguseorgambling.
However,itgraduallydestroysthefamilylivesofpeoplewithanexcessive
workload.Moreover,aritualperfectionism,senseofduty,andconstantcontrol
atworkcantransfertoaperson’sfreetimeand,asaresult,thisalsohastobe
planned,controlled,andperfectlyexecuted.
Whenwebeganpreparingthismonograph,wewantedittobe,aboveall,abook
thatdescribescomprehensivelythephenomenonofexcessiveworkloadand
workaholism.Thisisnotonlyasummaryofourwork,butalsoadescriptionof
whatwaswritteninPolishandnon-Polishliteratureduringthisperiod.Thebook
waswrittenaspartoftheresearchprojectconductedbytheNationalCenterfor
Science(grantNN106346440)in2011-2013.However,thedescribedstudieswere
alsoconductedintheyears2001-2011(alsoaspartofgrantKBNH01F08727).
Theformalstructureofthemonographreflectsthestagesofthecreationof
theWorkingExcessivelyQuestionnaire(WEQ).Inthefirstchapter,basedon
theanalysisoftheliterature,wefocusonshowingboththerelationshipbetween
excessiveworkloadandworkaholism,aswellasthecausesandnegativeeffects
ofexcessivefocusonwork.Wealsopresentpossibletheoreticalexplanations
ofthephenomenonofworkaholism.Inthesecondchapter,wediscussesthe
variousresearchmethodsusedinstudiesofworkaholism,illustratingthe
complexityoftheproblemofthisphenomenon.Wedescribethefoundationof
ourownquestionnaireandtheprocessofworkingonitsfinalversion.Inthefinal
chapter,wediscussthecorrelatesofthefourscalesoftheWorkingExcessively
Questionnaire.Intheannex,wepresentasheetofquestionsandstandardsfor
differentgroups.
Writingthismonographistheresultoftheeffortsofmanypeople,andnot
justthoselistedonthecover.First,wewouldliketothankallpersonsinvolved
intheresearch,whichrequiredthemtodevoteagreatdealoftheirtimeand
