thefirsteditorofthepapyrus,whorestorestheplaceas:[δεδ]εiṭiKńωV
(dediticii).Tespellingofthatword,whichinGreekisahapax,has
beencorrectedtoδηδεitiKńωV.78Tatsupplementagreeswiththesize
ofthelacuna,whichcancontainnotonlythehypotheticalδη,butalso
apartoftheVandalmostentirelythesecondδofthatword.
Immediatelyaferthelacuna,inthemiddleofline9,thereisafrag-
mentofanobliquestroke,linkingtheextantεwiththelostprecedent
letter.WhentheplateofthefirsteditionofP.Giss.40wasmade,
thatstrokewasslightlylonger.79Tis,however,doesnotfacilitatethe
identificationoftheletter.Underthestroke,thephotographshows
twoparallelfadedstrokes.Tefirstonefromthetopisinfactanillu-
sionduetoapapyrusfibre.Telowerone,however,isreal.Onthe
originalthereisnowonlyaremnantofitintheformofaninkdot.
Onthebasisoftheupperfalseustroke”,theletterprecedingεcould
bereconstructedast,γorλ.However,therealexistenceofthelower
strokeindicatesaδ.Aparticularlygoodparallelisprovidedbythe
