Awareoftheexistenceofthose“islandsoffreedom,”Ihavechosentofocus

ontheartwhichwas,tovaryingdegrees,enslavedandmutilated;theartwhich

wasbornindirectconfrontationwiththecensorshipofce.Tischoicewasacon-

sequenceofmymulti-yearresearchintoconstraintsputonfreedomofspeech.In

myearlierworks,Ialsodescribedpost-warPolishcultureinthecontextofthe

activitiesofthecensorshipofce,13butinthiscase,Idecidedtoinvestigatepoorly

exploredsources,namely,theconﬁdentialBulletinsforcensors.Iwasprimarily

interestedinthearticlespublishedtheredevotedtoﬁction,althoughmyresearch

alsocoveredmaterialsonnon-ﬁctionandothertextsofculture.

Onceagain,myseveralyearsofstudyingtheBulletinsconﬁrmedthatitis

impossibletodiscussthehistoryoftheliteratureofPeople)sPolandwithoutout-

liningthepoliticalcontext.Tisisevidentfromreadingthearticlespublished

there,whichdidnotconcealthefactthatthereviewsofliterary,ﬁlmordramatic

worksweremeanttobolsterideology.Censorsdiscussedspeciﬁctexts,referring

tocurrentpoliticaleventsandadjustingtheirassessmenttotheguidelinesfor-

mulatedbytheleadershipofthePolishWorkers)Party,andfrom1948,thePolish

UnitedWorkers)Party.

Takingintoaccountbothofthesecontexts-culturalandpolitical-had

afundamentalinﬂuenceontheshapeofthisbook.Anadditionalrolewasalso

playedbythewayinwhichIdecidedtopresentmaterialspublishedincensor-

shipperiodicals.Bulletins,likeanyserialpublications,canbereadandanalyzed

chronologically-accordingtotheorderoftheirappearance-orproblematically

-devotingatentiontoselectedtopicsandquestions;bothtypesofreadingper-

formslightlydilerentfunctions.Teformerallowsustolookattheperiodicals

intheirhistoricaldevelopment;thelater,toisolateanddiscussonlythetopics
