AccordingtoUNICEF(2016),over31millionchildrenwereamongstall
recordedinternationalmigrantsworldwide.Amongstthem,28millionwere
forcedtomovebyviolence,11millionofthesechildrenwereclassedasref-
ugeesorasylumseekers,whilstanother20millionconstitutedsocalledother
internationalmigrants.Whereastheproportionofadultrefugeeslivingout-
sidetheircountryoforiginis1in20,itismuchhigheramongstchildren,
totalling1in3.AbouthalfoftherefugeesfromSyria,AfghanistanandSoma-
liaareminors.Thisisjustoneofmanyindicatorsprovingthattherefugee
populationismuchyoungerthantheoverallmigrantpopulation.Overahalf
oftherefugeesarechildrenunder18,whilstintheoverallmigrantpopulation
theproportionofchildrenremainsat13%.Moreover,1in8international
migrantsisachild.ThisismuchhigherinthecaseofmigrantsfromAfrica
-where1in3isachild.7in10childrenseekingasyluminEuropeescaped
conflictsinSyria,AfghanistanorIraq.AsiaandAfricatogetherhost3outof
5migrantchildren,indicatingthatmediadiscourses,claimingthatEuropeis
thesoledestinationwhichacceptsthehighestnumbersofrefugees,aretruly
overstated(seegraphno.1).
