weremanifest)tofamilylifeandrelationswithinlocalcommunities
(Wódz,K.,Wódz,J.,2006:15-16).Duringthisperiodoftime,toput
itinPierreBourdieu’sterms,thefullydeveloped,traditionalforms
oftheSilesianculture,tillthenverymuchinstitutionalisedandthus
continuouslyreinforced,ceasedtobereproduced.Tiswasthefrst
stageofdismantlingofthelocalculturalandsocialvalues-deeply
rootedintheSilesians’mentalityandidentity.Te20thcenturysaw
furtherchangesintheculturalmosaicsoftheregion.Startedin1989-
1990theindustrialtransformation(naturallyegectedbythesystem
transformation)broughtabouttheregion’sdeindustrializationre-
sultingintherestructuringofindustrialcentresandmassivereduc-
tionofemploymentinmining.Arapidliquidationoftherecently
dominatingbranchesofindustry(chieflyextractiveandmetallurgi-
cal)trigeredmanypreviouslynotpredicted,negativephenomena
suchasdestabilisationandpauperisationofworking-classcommu-
nities,degradationofurbanspace,appearanceofextensiveurban
wasteanddilapidationofformermine-orfactory-ownedbuildings,
emergenceofpovertyenclaves,ghettos,inhabitedbyindividualsand
familiesdependentonsocialwelfare,threatenedbysocialexclusion
(Wódz,K.,Wódz,J.,2006).Teproblemsweretakingondramaticdi-
mensionsespeciallywherethefallingindustryhadnotbeenreplaced
byanyconsiderableinvestments,wherenewworkplacesintheser-
vicesector(especiallyifthesearespecialistservicesrequiringhigh
qualifcations,suchasfnancial,legal,consulting,educational,PR,
etc.)cannotcompensatelossesrelatedtothewindingupofestablish-
mentspreviouslyemployinghundredsorthousandsofemployees-
includingsignifcantgroupsofnarrowlyqualifedbluecollarworkers
(Wódz,Gnieciak,2011:100).Terestructuringofthesteelworksand
closedownofthecoalminesforcedtheresidentsoffactoryhousing
estatestolookforjobsoutsideofvicinities.Everydaycommutingdis-
turbedtheestablishedrhythmoflifeofthesofarminingsettlements,
thuscuttingSilesiansogfromtheirfamiliarspace.Peoplestartedto
distancethemselvesfromoneanotherbothinthesenseofspaceand
intermsoftheweakeningofneighbourlybonds.Transitioningfrom
onejobtoanothercauseddiversifcationofwages,lifestylechanges,
