traditionceasedtoexistanditssocialimageunderwentadramatic
change.Teprocessofreproductionandcreationofanaxionorma-
tivesystem-asetofprofessed,experiencedandpractisedvaluesas
wellastheirexpressivenormsandrulesofpracticalbehavioursand
actions-hasbeenrelaxed.Accordingly,itbecamemoreimportant
forresearcherstobelookingforsometracesoftherepresentation
ofSilesianspecifcityinpopularcultureartefacts.Allthemorethat
theendofthePolishPeople’sRepublicin1989didnotmanifestit-
selfonlyintraumaticeconomicrestructuringasalsosimultaneously
ledtotheempowermentofnationalminorities,ethnicgroupsand
provincialcommunities(Browarny,2012,http://www.polska-niem-
cy-interakcje.pl).Tesystemtransformationwasaccompaniedby
aprocessofreviewingthecollectivememory,beingthusfarselec-
tiveorideologicallydistorted.WorksbySilesianwritersthatwere
createdduringthatperiodoftimeconstituteanintegralelementof
theprocess.Bymeansofautobiographies,familystoriesandregional
novels,thestoryofSilesiawasretold,constructedoutofavarietyof
memoriesandpersonalnarratives.Teregion’shistoryhasbecome
aprivate,familialhistory,areportontheneighbours’fate,thetra-
jectoryofdevelopmentanddownfallofcommunities,settlements,
towns(Uniłowski,2001).
InthisverybookwedealwiththeidentityofUpperSilesiaandof
theSilesians,trackingthetracesoftheirpresenceinliterature,which
duetotheauthors’ageandoutputreferstotheSilesianrealityasseen
fromtheperspectiveofthe1990s.Tewriters’memoriesinevitably
stemfromtherealityofthePolishPeople’sRepublic,anditisthrough
thelensofthaterathatwewillbefollowingthetransformations
ofSilesianstructuresoffeelingcapturedintheregionalliterature.
Regionalasitisrootedinthatpartoftheworld,butalsoglobal(or
putmorenarrowly:national)duetotheauthors’talentandawide
culturalperspectivefeaturingtheirwritings.Tenovels/thewriters’
memoriesconstituteaparticulartypeofthesocialrepresentations
ofUpperSilesia,therepresentationswhichbelongtoacommunity
withinwhichtheyarecreatedtoagreaterextentthantoanindividual.
